Stormy Glass Mountain

September 5, 2011

Hello Darlings!

I would like to present you with my entry for the Craftster Challenge # 66 – Inspired By Nature:

This mountain is hand crafted by layers of sculpted paper Mache, and is painted with acrylic paint. The trees and waterfall are made of broken glass.

The trees have individual support structures of skewers that help keep them balanced. As part of my ever changing mind, I have left most of the trees and their skewers free standing, so that as I make more trees, or perhaps the time of year changes, I can rotate out the trees or rearrange them as I would like. I feel like this would really enhance the potential of this mountain. A mountain out in the world is constantly changing and evolving to its surrounds, so I would like to take that into account and have my mountain be continuously changing.

Having said that, I have already begun drafting ideas for concepts for various holiday themed trees to use and switch out on my mountain.

The thunderous storm cloud is simple foam board and holographic gift bag bedding. I actually had old foam board on hand from an old project which had gotten some bumps and bruises.  To cover them, and make it look more like a rain cloud, I continued to use acrylic paint to add to the effect of the cloud. If you look closely, you can see the cloud is actually two pieces of foam board adhered together. In between both pieces, I individually laid out strands of the gift bag filler to create lovely flowing rain. If you aren’t sure what I am talking about, think about the gift wrap section at the Dollar Store. There are bags, usually of different colors, of strands of this stuff that you place under items in a gift basket for example. That’s all it is.

As you can see in the pictures, the rain cloud is able to rotate and twirl to better add to the effect of a rainstorm.

The concept of this piece is based on some of my favorite things, glass projects and thunderstorms! I figured why not combine my two loves into one! I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! It was such a fun project to work on.

I think voting begins on September 9th, so PLEASE vote for me if you liked my artwork!! I would immensely appreciate it!

Thank you Darlings!

Love,
The Sparkle Queen
